Isabelle Howarth Together since the world began: the madman and the lover
I explored the duality in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland to present Alice’s child-like bewilderment at the bizarre world she enters. At the same time I have drawn on the suggestion that Alice’s adventure is a nightmare world within which there is a darkness and immorality.
Charles Blackman’s work led me to look further into Alice’s adventure. William Kentridge influenced my charcoal drawings, and the 1980s Czech film Alice provided a postmodern exploration of the story.
The viewer will comprehend these conflicting qualities of Alice’s adventure, at the same [time] seeing the beautiful world of the imagination.
