Many artists, like Brett, ensure they hold on to key works that have been pivotal for them as they build their careers and develop their practice. This exhibition draws from this collection of Brett's and traces significant themes and periods.
Spanning almost forty years, the works provide fascinating insights to the working life of the artist. Over sixty works exemplify the subject matter that inspired him. Themes and interests developed and abandoned in his early working life are re-visited later and the juxtapositions are intriguing.
These themes include Sydney and Paris urban landscapes, abstractions based on the picturesque French countryside, exotic nude odalisques reclining, bathing or sunbathing and nature studies.
