Artists at work: Francis Upritchard Workshop for primary and secondary students

Who are the towering bronze beings that welcome visitors to the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building and how were they made?

In this hands-on session, we delve into the ideas and processes behind the sculptures Here Comes Everybody 2022 by Francis Upritchard. Students participate in close looking, inquiry-based discussion and experimentation with material and form to gain an in-depth understanding of how these major works were conceived and created. With direct access to Upritchard’s original maquettes and sample materials from her studio, we learn new insights about the artist’s creative process and studio practice.

Artists at work is the Art Gallery’s object-based learning program that connects students with an artist’s studio practice. Led by Gallery educators, these sessions combine observation and analysis of an artwork in-situ with a related art-making session designed by the artist in collaboration with our Art Gallery education team. The program is designed to promote a deep understanding of artist materials, process and decision-making in the studio.

This program is available for primary and secondary students, with relevant curriculum and course adaptations for each education level. It is designed for groups of 45 students or less. Materials included.
